2008/9 COMPETITION UPDATE

This year the theme will be Endangered Species of the World, and we’d like to encourage children to think about all those animals that need our extra protection – like giant pandas, tigers, rhinos, elephants, to name a few. As well as getting children to develop their drawing skills, the competition also seeks to raise awareness of how muscular dystrophy affects thousands of children across the UK, see: www.muscular-dystrophy.org.

Over 5,000 schools and groups will be invited to take part, and we expect over 25,000 children to participate. We are in the process of developing themed activities for each key stage that explore the geography, landscape, wildlife and global environmental influences of this subject.

This year, our competition is set to grow from strength to strength, as it is now being supported by GlaxoSmithKline, The Royal Academy and The Natural History Museum.

Competition dates

We will be announcing the full details of the competition in September 2008 at a launch ceremony at The Royal Academy. This will coincide with sending out packs and application forms to schools, community groups and youth organisations.

The competition itself will take place from January through to May 2009, and will be open to all young people aged 4 to 19 years. All individual school winners need to send in their drawings by the beginning of June to be eligible for the national competition.

This year, the national competition will be judged by a panel of popular artists, celebrities, children and young adults with muscular dystrophy, and representatives from the Royal Academy.

The awards ceremony will then take place at the Natural History Museum in June 2009, and winners will be presented with special prizes and the chance to meet our supporting celebrities.
